"About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27: 46).
These words are hard to be understood in the sense that how can Jesus, the eternal Son of God be forsaken by the father? How is it possible that he who enjoyed intimate fellowship with the father, prior to his incarnation and during the time of his sojourning here on earth, be forsaken by God? But his being forsaken by God was for a short time. The question is, why was he forsaken?
He was forsaken because on the cross, he was bearing in his own self the sins of our entire lives. The Lord laid on him the iniquities of us all. He was made sin for us, so that you and I will not have to suffer for the same sins Jesus suffered for (2 Corinthians 5; 21). God is holy and will not suffer sin to go unpunished, for that was the primary reason why he forsook him for awhile. Learn this, Jesus for the first time experienced the pain of being separated from his father, so that you and I will never be forsaken by God, even as it is written: I will never leave you nor forsake you" ( Hebrews 13; 5).
Luke 23:34
"Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
The prophet prophesied saying, "And interceded for the transgressors" (Isaiah 53; 12). The Man Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah by interceding for his crucifiers. Jesus knew the people were ignorant and did not know what they were doing, for had they known it, they would not have crucified their long awaited anticipated Messiah for any reason. Jesus interceding for his crucifiers at the point of death was a visible manifestation of his love and grace towards the undeserving. We are to learn from Jesus example by forgiving our enemies and the very people who hurts us.
Luke 23:43
And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Jesus was crucified in the midst of two criminals. These two thieves were justly punished for their sins, but Jesus was innocent. One of the two criminals reviled Jesus, whiles the other cried out for mercy. The bible says; "One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." From this passage, we can see that salvation is not by works, but by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The penitent thief exercised saving faith in Christ, and that was enough for Jesus to take him to paradise. Jesus stands ready to save to the uttermost all who come to God through him on the basis of faith (Hebrews 7; 25).
John 19:28
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty."
Jesus on the cross fulfilled a prophecy about him in the Psalms: They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink (Psalm 69; 21). When Jesus said he was thirsty, they gave him sour wine to quench his thirst and the scripture was fulfilled (John 19: 29).
Luke 23:46
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit." Having said this, He breathed His last.
Here, Jesus is yielding up his Spirit into the hands of his father, indicating the fact that he was about to die. His once and for all time sacrifice has been accepted, therefore he can now die in peace
John 19:30
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Jesus finally cried out it is, "finished", in the Greek, "tetelestai", indicating the fact that he has finished the work which the father sent him to do, and that was to wrought eternal salvation for us. Salvation and all it's benefits can be found in none else, save in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. The pleasure of the Lord has prospered in his hands (Isaiah 53; 10). God bless you
